«Improving Access to BRCA1/2 Genetic Testing for Breast Cancer Patients and Their Families in Ukraine»

Research: Community Voice

About the project

The project provides women diagnosed with breast cancer (BC) and their close relatives with the opportunity to undergo free, high-precision genetic testing for hereditary BRCA1/BRCA2 mutations using next-generation sequencing (NGS), as well as cascade testing. Participants can also receive a consultation with a geneticist.

The program is available to residents of Kharkiv, Sumy, Chernihiv, and Dnipropetrovsk regions and aims to facilitate the timely detection of hereditary mutations, support the selection of personalized treatment, and assess cancer risks for family members.

Команда Mission Kharkiv

The program is designed for two target groups (based on confirmed place of residence or an internally displaced person (IDP) certificate):

  • Primary patients – women diagnosed with breast cancer (BC);
  • Blood relatives of primary patients – eligible for cascade testing.

Important!

Cascade testing of relatives is only available if the primary patient has undergone testing through our project and received a positive result.

The following services are provided free of charge as part of the project:

Molecular genetic testing using NGS
(Next Generation Sequencing):
comprehensive next-generation sequencing of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes for primary patients diagnosed with breast cancer.

Cascade testing of blood relatives:
genetic testing to detect the familial pathogenic or likely pathogenic BRCA1/2 variant in first-degree female relatives.

Administration and coverage of diagnostic costs:
issuance of official guarantee letters that fully cover the costs of biological sample collection and laboratory services provided by the CSD LAB network.

Free genetic counseling:
post-test consultation with a geneticist for all program participants, including an explanation of the clinical significance of the test results and an assessment of hereditary cancer risks for the family.
