Ukraine Cancer Relief

Our oncology program

What began in the heart of Kharkiv has blossomed into a nationwide initiative. 27 February 2022 – The bombing of the Kharkiv Centre for Oncology and the day everything changed for Mission Kharkiv. This motivated us to organize a consistent, quality supply of cancer care and other medication to Ukraine and create a better system for our doctors and patients.

More than 9000 oncology patients were provided with a full chemotherapy course. Over 55 000 units of medical drugs have been distributed. More than  1.93 billion UAH were allocated in medical donations.

The urgent cancer need in Ukraine

Cancer remains the second leading cause of death in Ukraine, with cases rising due to poor living conditions, stress, and limited healthcare access. The demand for life-saving cancer medications far exceeds what state programs can provide.

Mission team

The challenges cancer patients face in Ukraine

Financial barriers: The war has left families financially devastated. Many cannot afford life-saving medications or therapies, which can cost upwards of $1,000 per dose for drugs like Trastuzumab.

Disrupted supply chains:
Key medications are often unavailable in pharmacies or medical institutions due to war-induced logistical challenges and budget deficits.

Healthcare system overload: Oncology centers are overcrowded, forcing patients to wait months for treatment or rely on costly private clinics.

Late diagnoses and rising mortality: Limited access to screening and diagnostic services results in 35% of patients being diagnosed at stage 4 cancer, severely reducing survival chances.

Our system tracks every step, from registration to medication distribution, and is visible in real-time. Patient data is securely stored, coded, and accessible only to authorized team members.

How our Oncology Program works

  1. Patients provide us with relevant documents: ID, IPN, medical records, and histological and radiological exams verifying their diagnosis.
  2. Patients provide us with a signed and sealed doctor’s prescription to reserve medication from Mission Kharkiv.
  3. After we verify their documents and establish a connection with them and their doctors, Mission Kharkiv reserves the entire treatment for approved patients and stores the medication in our bomb-proof cold-chain warehouse.
  4. We provide the patient with one dose of medication needed for one round of prescribed treatment.
  5. We provide our donors with detailed reports of how and where medications are being used in real-time.
  6. Finally, we carry out statistical data analysis to track the efficacy of our Oncology Program and ensure any future decisions we make are data-driven.

Ukraine Cancer Relief projects

At Mission Kharkiv, we’ve established a comprehensive system to address the critical needs of cancer patients in Ukraine. Our efforts ensure that patients receive the medications, resources, and support they need to fight their battles with dignity and hope.

Cancer Medication Aid

As part of Ukraine Cancer Relief, we provide cancer patients with free oncology medications — including chemotherapy and immunotherapy.

We work exclusively with verified prescriptions, coordinate closely with oncologists and hospitals, and store all medications under pharmaceutical-grade cold-chain conditions to ensure the safety and efficacy of every dose.

Cold-Chain Storage: The Pharma Bunker

To maintain the efficacy of temperature-sensitive medications, we’ve established an underground Pharma Bunker equipped with refrigerated chambers. This facility, powered by autonomous energy systems, ensure that drugs like chemotherapy agents remain viable even during power outages.

Psychological Support (MHPSS)

Cancer patients face immense psychological strain, exacerbated by the hardships of war. Our Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) program provides individual counseling, group therapy sessions, and resources to help patients and their families cope with the emotional and mental toll of their diagnosis and treatment.

Oncology Drug Provision Coordination

Access to chemotherapy in Ukraine is often interrupted due to delayed public procurement and uneven distribution. Mission Kharkiv fills this gap by identifying drug shortages (e.g., Oxaliplatin for colorectal cancer), procuring medications directly, and delivering full courses of treatment to patients with verified prescriptions. Through close coordination with regional oncologists and our cold-chain system, we ensure that life-saving therapies reach the right patient at the right time — especially in high-need regions like Kharkiv.

Research: Community Voice

In war-affected regions like Kharkiv and Sumy, we are pioneering research on the link between chronic stress and rising cancer rates. Our 7-month project “Community Voice: Stress, Oncology, and the Right to Health” will survey 300+ patients, doctors, and residents to explore how war-related trauma affects health outcomes — and to advocate for better screening and psychosocial integration in healthcare strategy. Findings will be presented to national and local health authorities, fueling evidence-based recovery plans and long-term cancer prevention.

Transportation Assistance

In war-torn areas, the journey to treatment can be as hard as the treatment itself. Mission Kharkiv helps cancer and palliative patients reach life-saving care through safe, free, and specialized medical transport.
We prioritize the most vulnerable: elderly, women in crisis, people with disabilities, and those living in remote or de-occupied areas. We don’t just move people — we restore their right to care.

Hygiene

For cancer patients undergoing treatment — especially in frontline or de-occupied areas — access to basic hygiene is often disrupted. Maintaining cleanliness and comfort is not only a matter of dignity, but a key part of infection prevention and mental well-being.

Mission Kharkiv integrates hygiene support into its cancer care model. We are preparing to distribute personalized hygiene kits to patients, based on real-time feedback from clinicians and patients themselves. Each kit will be adapted to disease stage, mobility, and social vulnerability — ensuring that hygiene support is practical, respectful, and relevant.

Cancer awareness

Too many Ukrainians face cancer without warning. One in three patients is diagnosed at Stage 4 — when it's often too late. Mission Kharkiv runs a awareness campaign focused on early detection, stigma reduction, and access to screening:

We work face-to-face with communities — especially where cancer is still a taboo — to create a culture where asking for help is strength, not shame.
