Cold-chain storage: pharma bunker
In times of war, access to cancer treatment depends not only on supply – but on survival. Every missile strike in Ukraine threatens not only lives, but also the fragile systems that store and distribute life-saving medicines. One direct hit or prolonged power outage can render entire stockpiles of critical oncology drugs useless.
Pharma Bunkers are Mission Kharkiv’s strategic response to this reality. This specialized underground cold-chain storage facility are built to preserve cancer medications under any conditions – even during bombardments, power failures, or infrastructure collapse.
A core component of the Ukraine Cancer Relief Program
Pharma Bunkers are an integral part of our Cancer Medication Support project, which ensures continuous access to chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and other essential treatments for cancer patients across Ukraine – even in frontline and high-risk areas.
Originally developed during the emergency phase of the war, the bunker now represent a sustainable, long-term solution for protecting medication logistics in unstable and dangerous environments.
Why it matters
- Cancer drugs are expensive, delicate, and require strict temperature control.
- Many medical facilities have no secure storage and no backup systems.
- Strikes have already destroyed oncology hospitals and storage units in Kharkiv and beyond.
- Patients can lose weeks of treatment if just one delivery is spoiled.
Pharma Bunkers are the last line of defense – protecting vital medicine from chaos.
At a glance
- Bomb-proof construction, located underground.
- Four independent storage chambers (approx. 40m³ total capacity).
- Autonomous power supply and heating, fully independent from city grids.
- 24/7 surveillance: six cameras, motion alarms, two-person access only.
- Digital temperature & humidity monitoring.
- Automated humidity extraction and adaptive ventilation.
- Remote generator and chamber controls.
- Double insulation for extreme conditions.

A scalable model for crisis-ready healthcare
The Pharma Bunker is more than just a bunker. It is a model – one that can be scaled to other regions, adopted by medical facilities, or replicated through public-private partnerships. In a country where oncology care must operate under the constant threat of attack, infrastructure resilience saves lives.
Pharma Bunker infrastructure in the region, creating secure reserves of chemotherapy and supportive treatments.
These reserves allow for:
- Pre-positioned drug stockpiling in advance of patient demand
- Rapid redistribution to hospitals and mobile medical teams
- Continuity of care even under shelling or siege
- Guaranteed cold-chain compliance for temperature-sensitive medications
