Alliance Magazine, a key media outlet focused on philanthropy and humanitarian initiatives, recently featured Mission Kharkiv in its blog on organizations that are “emerging in the time of crisis” and reshaping the humanitarian space.

“In a landscape marked by delay and confusion, where traditional structures often struggle to respond, new initiatives are stepping in – and doing things differently,” writes Carla Vitantonio, a humanitarian researcher based in Cuba.

Mission Kharkiv was born as a response to the breakdown in medical logistics during the first weeks of the full-scale invasion. At the heart of our work are real data and real needs – gathered by people from the same communities we serve.

Our lack of prior experience in the humanitarian sector gave us a fresh and critical perspective – helping us question long-standing but often ineffective practices. We channel more than 97% of our budget directly into projects and report transparently to all stakeholders.

“This is not a matter of capacity. It’s a matter of trust,” the article notes, pointing to a systemic issue: international donors often require newer organizations to funnel funds through intermediaries – a practice that can dilute efficiency and impact.

Mission Kharkiv is mentioned alongside initiatives like NEAR Network, which rethinks humanitarian response from the perspective of the Global South and RINGO’s Reverse Call for Proposals, aimed at shifting how funding and accountability work in the sector.

The fact that our work is being recognized and included in global conversations isn’t a reason for big statements. It’s a quiet reminder that when systems don’t work, it doesn’t mean nothing can be done.
